CELEBRATE MOTHERS EVERYWHERE THIS MAY

Be inspired by ANNE BURRAS

An Amazing American Mother

Amazing_mothers2

America celebrates Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Amelia Earhart and many others who have contributed to building the nation. They have monuments and memorabilia named after them.

So, why has Anne Burras been ignored? She is one of the most important women in American history. At the age of 14, she arrived in Jamestown in 1608, as the maid of Mrs Forrest. They were the only two women amongst 200 men. Mrs Forrest died, soon after arrival, and teenager Anne had to fend for herself.

Not for long however, as John Leyden befriended her and they were the first couple to be married in the Jamestown colony. Anne gave birth to four daughters and raised the first colonial family in America. Therefore, Anne Burras, or Mrs Leyden as she became known, has the right to be called the founding European Mother of America.

It is time that Anne Burras, the maidservant who became the founding colonial mother, is recognized.

  • Why not build a statue to her memory?
  • Why not have a national holiday in her name, representing what women have done to develop America?
  • Why not make her a folk heroine whose story is told in every school?
  • Indeed, why is Anne Burras not already famous?

“Amazing Women provides an effective tool for people to learn without feeling overwhelmed.  What a wonderful inspiration to women of all ages everywhere in the world but especially to the up and coming female success stories.  Anyone lacking in confidence, but especially females, can read this book and come away with the knowledge that any dream is possible.  I would love to see this book in the school systems to be utilized as a tool to encourage girls who don’t have the courage to chase their dreams.  Turning the last page of this book, I was left with the knowledge that the battle was worth it and must continue!”

Defining a book - eBook, iBook?

Ibooks_pdfs-300x268

Until recently, it was easy to define a book. It was something that you could read in a printed form and was bound by two covers.

We are about to see many new forms of the book. But, it is bad news for booksellers in the high street and shopping centres, as most book shops will go out of business.

An interative book will provide you with an audio version of the text when you press a button. It will provide a video version when you press another button. You will be able to interrogate it through a number of pick and play choices. Our Amazing People publications will be part of the new approach.

Apple Inc have released their ibook and self development guide. It is a multi-media source of information, available only through online ibookstore outlets. That is why bookshops will be closing.

But, it is good news for authors. You will be able to create interesting interactive content and get your publication into the market within a few hours of its creation. No longer will you have to go on bended knee to the publishers and ask them to publish your work.

So, the second group to receive a big shock will be the big publishing houses.Thousands of people will lose their jobs.

The third group will be librarians. We will see many libraries close down. People will not need to go to a library as they can download everything they need. Many librarians will be out of work.

The fourth group to be surprised will be teachers. Apple will make textbooks in multi media form. At the flick of a finger, students will have a vast amount of information. That already is the case through online search engines, such as Google, but now the material for a topic will be in one place – the ibook.

So, it will be a major benefit for all students. Instead of breaking their backs carrying all the books for homework, they will just have one small electronic device, such as an Apple ipad.

Get ready for the revolution. We are producing the multi media applications for teachers, students and parents in conjunction with our new publishing partner, Apple Inc, and competing for the multi billion dollar market in ibook publishing.

It will be an interesting and exciting journey. Please join us, regards,

Charles Margerison – President of Amazing People Club -

The Charles Dickens’ Interview

By Dr Charles Margerison

Charles Margerison

It is my pleasure to introduce Charles Dickens who wrote many outstanding books...

Charles your books like Oliver Twist, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, A Christmas Carol, Hard Times, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations and other titles have been read by millions of people. Why did you write them?

Charles Dickens

Thank you for taking an interest in my books. A lot of the books reflected my own life experience living in London during the period 1812 to 1870.

I was the second of eight children. We knew what it was like to be hungry. My parents named me Charles John Huffman Dickens. Seeing my father sent to a debtor’s prison was a shock as it meant the rest of the family went with him and were treated as criminals. It was even more of a shock when I went to work in a factory. Warren’s Blacking Warehouse was near Charing Cross Railway Station. The noise, dirt, smell and the rats made me want to run away. Although only 12 years of age, I could not, as the money paid for my families lodgings.

On my first days there a young bloke showed me how to cover and prepare pots of blacking paste, his name was Bob Fagin. What a good name I thought!.  Later the name of Fagin was to become famous as that of the mastermind criminal leader of the boys gang in ‘The Adventures of Oliver Twist’ which I completed in 1838.

Charles Margerison

Given the family problems, did you have much of a formal education?

Charles Dickens

Once my father came out of prison, I was able to continue with my education. I eventually got a job in a legal office and then as a journalist. Therefore, my training in those jobs was as important as my formal education. For example, I learnt how to write in shorthand, which was a great skill to have. Each day, I had to report on issues at Court and political issues of the day. I was known as Boz. That was the title under which I wrote short stories. Those stories became the foundation for many of my books which emerged from the weekly and monthly short stories.

Dickens

Charles Margerison

It seems that your job enabled you to gain ideas for your stories.

Charles Dickens

Yes, that was definitely the case. Also, in order to keep fit and taking an interest in what was going on, I went for long walks around the streets of London. That gave me a real insight into life on the streets and the community.

My book, Nicholas Nickleby reflected on the criminal treatment of children in schools. Another book called The Old Curiosity Shop told of Little Nell’s loneliness in a mad world. Another story, called Barnaby Rudge, noted the problems between fathers and sons.  That no doubt reflected the relationship I had with my father. Those books and the one on Oliver Twist were all completed before 1840, when I was 28 years old. So, it was a busy and productive time of my life.

Charles Margerison

By that time, I presume you were becoming well known and people were waiting upon your next story?

Charles Dickens

Yes, in 1840, I started a new work called ‘Master Humphrey's Clock’. It was a series of short stories. Developing on my previous work, I resolved to expose the problems of the poor and the weakness of the law in giving them protection in a tough world. You need to remember that the Poor Laws meant that people who could not pay their way were sent to the workhouses. Conditions there were brutal, with little food and harsh living conditions designed to get people to go out and find work.

Thousands of people were leaving agricultural jobs and pouring into the cities, as the industrial revolution made factories more profitable than the fields. The living conditions in many places were appalling and disease was widespread. Many children, as well as adults, took ill and died. So, I felt strongly about these issues and wrote my stories hoping that they would get politicians to focus on such problems.

Charles Margerison

By that time, you also became known in the USA, which you visited in 1842.

Charles Dickens

Yes, there were clearly many social problems in the USA, albeit different in a number of ways. It was dreadful to see slaves traded like cattle. The whites were becoming rich at the expense of the blacks. That was one of various crimes of exploitation that I raised. Another was the exploitation of children, who were put to work in the fields as soon as they were able to fetch and carry. While in the USA, I started the Martin Chuzzlewit book and also began writing my ‘American Notes’.

Charles Margerison

So, what did you do on your return to Britain?

Charles Dickens

I decided to highlight the gap between the rich and the poor. In October 1843, I commenced The Christmas Carol. In this book Ebenezer Scrooge, a miser who was greedy and selfish, received a shock. The Ghost of Jacob Marley, his dead employee, re-appeared and spoke to him. ‘I am the Ghost of Christmas Present’, said the spirit.  As a result, Scrooge began to see things differently and transformed himself into a benefactor of poor people.

Charles Margerison

That is interesting as your own financial situation was improving as the sales of your books increased.

Charles Dickens

Yes, I take your point that by writing about the poor I was becoming rich. I had married 10 years earlier. In due course, we had 10 children. So, it was important that I kept writing to provide for my family and buy a house in Doughty Street, London. In addition, the income I gained enabled me and my family to travel in Europe. It was an excellent way of gathering stories while also having a holiday. In 1844, we went to Italy and later to France and Switzerland.  Dombey and Son was written partly on my travels.

During that time, I started a number of theatrical events where excerpts from my work were read and these attracted large numbers of people. It was the start of many, that I later did for charity. Indeed, my readers demanded more, particularly for Christmas. Five novellas were produced which included Cricket on the Hearth, The Chimes, and Battle for Life.

Charles Margerison

You must have been very busy, as you were also an editor of a newspaper.

Charles Dickens

Yes, I wrote every day when I was not travelling. It became second nature and ideas came to me quickly, particularly those where they touched on my own life. For example, the book David Copperfield was, in one sense, autobiographical. Perhaps it should have been called Mr Micawber, as he was a key character. He was always hoping something would turn up to change his fortunes. Some say Mr Micawber was like my father. Invariably poor but equally optimistic about the future. However, during the years from 1850 to 1852, it was hard to be optimistic. We had to face tragedy when my infant daughter Dora and also my father died. My wife collapsed under the great strain, unable to cope.

Another example of a personal experience that guided my writing was the story of Little Dorritt. That was my book about the evils of the prison system. Set in Marshalsea Prison, where my family had suffered. Amy Dorrit lived in the prison caring for her father. She was a victim of the system that needed to be exposed. I, also could have been trapped and my life ruined in a similar fashion when my father was sent to such a prison.

Beyond the novels and stories, I wanted to write for children. From 1851 to 1853, I produced The Child’s History of England. It covered the period from 50 BC to when Victoria became Queen. She attended some of my theatre presentations.

But I also continued writing books. Hard Times was another title with a social meaning. It was published first in a weekly magazine Household Words, which I edited.

Charles Margerison

Your life however was about to change in many ways.

Charles Dickens

Things were not going as well on the home front. In June 1858, a legal separation was arranged from my wife Catherine. A year earlier, I had met Ellen Ternan, an actress. She took a role in The Frozen Deep, a play that I had written. We became friends, albeit she was 18 and I was 45. It was a friendship that blossomed into a lifelong relationship

In the meantime, I started a new book, The Tale of Two Cities. The start of the book summed up my feeling when I wrote, ‘It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. It was the age of wisdom; it was the age of foolishness.’  So it began, and maybe reflected my life. It was a time when I needed to start again.

The title Great Expectations reflected my new mood. A story of how a poor boy became a gentleman. Pip, Estella, Joe Gargery, Magwitch and Miss Haversham. I had met them all on the road of life. The sadness and happiness and all stations in between. But, sadness returned in 1863, when my mother died. Within a short period, my son, Walter died on a visit to India.

During that time, I wrote a new book, titled Our Mutual Friend. It was a story of wealth and how it can be gained and misused by judgements of what is fair and not so fair.

While writing it, I was involved in a train accident. Many people were killed and injured. While escaping I left behind an instalment of my new book. Taking a risk, I returned and retrieved it.

But the time for my writing was ebbing. Aged 58, I suddenly took ill. There was no time to finish writing my book The Mystery of Edwin Drood.  However, I hoped my stories would stir people into action to make the best of their lives and help others they met on life’s road to do likewise.

Charles Margerison

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the great books that you wrote, which have left us with a considerable legacy and understanding of your life and times.

Celebrating the CHARLES DICKENS Bicentennary

'No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it to anyone else.' So, said the great writer Charles Dickens. He would have known for he walked the streets of London during the mid 19th century, seeing the poverty and destitution. As a result, he wrote compelling novels like Oliver and Great Expectations.

Oliver_twist

He was born in 1812 and his birthday is celebrated on February 7th – 200 years to the day. We are all the product of the times in which we live. Dickens recorded with chilling clarity the vicious and violent world that he found in what was called a civilized country.

Yes, he knew what he was writing about, as he had seen the inside of prison at the age of 12. His father was sent to jail for debt and the family went with him. As a result, Charles was sent to work in a dirty rat infested factory to earn a living for the family.

It was the start of an amazing career, that I have written about in a personal way in a story published recently. Although having to leave school early in order to work, Charles Dickens developed his ability to write and expose the social injustices that he discovered.

Therefore, as we celebrate his contribution to literature, let us also remember the causes he supported, especially the protection of children in need and their development through education.

HOW LOVE STORIES EMERGE

With Valentine's day approaching, it seems like an appropriate time to reflect on love and relationships. I wanted to share the following beautiful article by Charles Margerison.....,enjoy and be inspired.

AMAZING LOVE STORIES

FROM THE BEDROOM TO THE BOARDROOM AND BEYOND…..

When did you first fall in love and why? Indeed, love stories emerge for different reasons. Why, for example, did William Shakespeare marry Anne Hathaway who was eight years older than him? Why did Napoleon, the most powerful man in France marry Josephine who he knew had many previous lovers?

How did Cassanova manage to have so many relationships without marrying? Why did many women agree to become mistresses, rather than press for marriage before agreeing to a long term relationship? Madame de Pompadour’s long term relationship with King Louis XV is one example amongst many.

February 14th is Saint Valentine's Day, which commemorates love between people. Some would now say it is a festival for shops to sell symbols of love.

Instead of trying to analyse the issues in psychoanalytical form, another approach can be used. It is called a BioView®. This is a combination of a biography and an interview where people ‘travel’ through time to tell their story. Dr Charles Margerison travelled back in time and conducted virtual interviews with a number of Amazing People about their relationships.

“Amazing Love Stories” is a unique book that explores the eternal question of love. What drew these people together and what pulled them apart? Was it just basic sexual attraction or something more?

One of the stories is about Marina Gamba who had three children with Galileo, the great scientist, even though he refused to marry her! Another tells of Sally Hemings, a slave girl, and describes her relationship with Thomas Jefferson, President of America, with whom it is said she had six children!

In return, how would the men have described the relationships? Dr Margerison represents the two points of view. “Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder” is a saying that has been around a long time. It seeks to explain not only what people like in the form of art or design, but also in relationships.

Our inner world of what we like determines what we try to find in love. In choosing our friends and partners, we look for people who are attractive to us in some way. They may be knowledgeable, skilled or they may look beautiful to us, but not to others. We put a value on what we see and hear. What one person sees as attractive in another is a source of fascination. Magazines and news are full of such stories.

There are many poems, plays and songs that try to understand the many aspects of what we call love. Some say that love is not a matter for the head, but a matter for the heart. Another view is that love is part of the survival process, as mentioned by Charles Darwin in his great work.

Darwin’s theory of evolution says that we are drawn to people who we feel will help us survive – not just physically in terms of reproduction, but also psychologically in terms of sharing interests and ideas.

In this way, love stories come in different forms and those in this ‘Amazing Love Stories’ book reveal many areas of attraction, from the bedroom to the boardroom and beyond. These BioViews® provide new insight on love and so can help you better understand your own life and relationships.

AUSTRALIA DAY - Who is the true founding father of Australia?

Honour The True Founder of Australia

With Australia Day just around the corner, author and international psychologist, Dr Charles Margerison says that Captain Arthur Phillip, should be formally honoured as the Founding Father of Australia. He was the leader of the first European settlement in Australia, and our first Governor.

Dr Margerison, has travelled back in time to interview Governor Phillip via an amazing new concept known as BioView®. It is featured in the release of Amazing People of Sydney, available in ebook, print-on-demand, and audio format.

'Governor Phillip is the Columbus of Australia, without whom, Australia wouldn’t be what it is today.'

”In my view, Governor Phillip is under recognized and under appreciated in Australian life. We celebrate Australia Day, but it would not have been without Governor Phillip.

'Through his leadership and example, Arthur Phillip, was the founding father of Sydney, New South Wales and the country of Australia.'

He was the first Australian hero,” says Dr Margerison who is the Founder of The Amazing People Club. – www.amazingpeopleclub.com . Dr Margerison is a resident of the Gold Coast.

”Governor Phillip’s achievements deserve wider and fuller recognition. His leadership in organizing and safely coordinating the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 ships, with about 1500 people on board, in 1788, was outstanding by any standards. In addition, his management of the convicts, the marines, officials and their families in the New South Wales colony over a five year period, between 1788 and 1792, was exceptional, given the extremely difficult and extraordinary conditions”

Sydney2

Dr Margerison’s new book , Amazing People of Sydney, is also written with respect to the Aboriginal people of New South Wales, whose lives were changed forever on the 18th January 1788.

”This book reflects the contributions of amazing people who have made their mark on Sydney. It is written via the process of BioViews®, where virtual interviews are recorded on events as we can imagine the participants would have seen them.  I trust the BioViews® capture both the conditions of the times and the achievements that have turned Sydney from a convict colony to an exciting, elegant international city reflecting a mutli-ethnic democratic way of life,” says Dr Margerison.  ‘I believe Australia needs to give Governor Phillip more credit, and that everyone should have a greater understanding of his story!’

Sample BioView® extract Arthur Phillip from Amazing People of Sydney:

Arthur Phillip

1738–1814

Life has its twists and turns

Despite our best plans, we have to adapt to the winds of change

Although a sailor for most of life, my major challenge came on the land

Indeed, it was a land far from home in a place called New South Wales

A place that had been inhabited for thousands of years by aboriginal tribes

My task was to lead convicts, marines and officers to form a new colony

That colony, at Sydney, Australia was the start of a great new country

It was my honour to be the appointed Governor and civil and military leader

You may ask what training and experience I had for the role?.....

© Dr Charles Margerison and The Amazing People Club

Additional BioView® extract Arthur Phillip from upcoming release Amazing People of Sydney:

Botany Bay was not what I had been led to believe

Fresh water was scarce, and the soil for crops was poor

The aboriginal population, the Eora, watched and waited

No doubt we looked like men from out of space to them

Two days later, I took a search party to look for a new place

After about five miles of sailing, we entered a gap in the cliffs

To our amazement, we found the finest harbour in the world

A thousand ships of the line could be securely stationed there

Port Jackson was the name Captain Cook had given it

But, it was a place he never entered

Returning to the main fleet, we were disturbed to see two ships

The French, led by Captain Perouse, landed in Botany Bay

They stayed awhile before leaving, accepting we had arrived first

So, it was a close run thing, as the colony would have been a French one

Sadly, they foundered in the seas to the north

By the 26th January. I ordered everyone to move to our new location

We celebrated by drinking a toast to our King George III

Our national flag was raised to a great cheer

The location of the township was named after Lord Sydney

Maybe I should have called it Port Phillip instead

It was the start of a new land

Also, I sent Captain King to Norfolk Island with a small group

It became our second colony

However, little did I know the problems that lay before me

As the Governor of New South Wales, I had many challenges

Not least, keeping law and order when food rations were very low

Also, enabling civil law to develop

I even allowed a convict to bring a case against ship’s captain

That would not have been possible in England....

NEW YORK, NEW YORK

The first Ellis Island Immigration Station was officially opened on 1 Jan 1892. The first immigrant to pass through Ellis was a "rosy-cheeked Irish girl," Annie Moore, age 15, from County Cork. She came with her two younger brothers to join their parents in New York City.
That first day, three large ships were waiting to land, and 700 immigrants passed through Ellis Island. In the first year, nearly 450,000 immigrants passed through the Island.
